IEEE Recommended Practice for Servicing, Testing, and Replacing Stationary Lead Acid Controlled Battery (VRLA)

This recommended practice is limited to maintenance, test schedules, and test procedures that can be used to optimize the life and performance of Lead Acid Control Valve (VRLA) batteries for stationary applications. The standard also provides guidelines for determining when to replace batteries.
The maintenance and testing programs described in this recommended practice constitute the “best program” based on information analyzed at the time this document was developed. The user should compare these methods taking into account their operating experience, operating conditions, manufacturer’s recommendations, resources and needs for developing a service program for a specific application.
These maintenance and testing recommendations were developed without regard to economic viability, availability of test equipment and personnel, or the relative importance of the application. Developing a maintenance and testing program for a specific load requires consideration of all issues, not just the technical issues discussed in this document.
Stationary cyclic loads, such as in alternative energy sources, are also outside the scope of this recommended practice.
This recommended practice does not include any other components of the DC system, nor the observation and testing of a DC system, even if the battery is part of this system.
